Lactate measurement: arterial versus capillary blood
نویسنده
چکیده
Lactate is the end product of the metabolic process of glucose utilization, known as anaerobic glycolysis, which occurs in the cytosol of all cells. In well-oxygenated tissues this lactate is metabolized further, but if tissues are inadequately oxygenated, lactate accumulates locally and blood concentration rises. As a sensitive but non-specific blood marker of tissue hypoxia, point-ofcare (POC) lactate measurement has long-established clinical utility in the early assessment and monitoring of acutely/critically ill patients and major trauma victims in emergency room and intensive care units.

Brief report: Serial capillary lactate measurement predict the evolution of early sepsis
OBJECTIVE In intensive care settings, blood lactate level measurement proved to be an excellent predictor of outcomes. In patients requiring less urgent treatment, the arterial blood lactate is less sensitive and its usefulness remains to be proven. Capillary blood lactate dosing, an emergent point-of-care technique readily available should be more sensitive to changes in these settings. METH...
متن کاملEffectiveness of arterial, venous, and capillary blood lactate as a sepsis triage tool in ED patients.
OBJECTIVE We evaluate the capacity of arterial (ABL), peripheral venous (VBL), and capillary (CBL) blood lactate concentration to early detect the presence of severe sepsis in patients admitted to the emergency department for a septic syndrome. METHODS Patients with signs of sepsis presenting to the emergency department were prospectively enrolled. Blood lactate was measured using a handheld ...
متن کاملThe use of finger-stick blood to assess lactate in critically ill surgical patients☆
BACKGROUND Using finger-stick capillary blood to assess lactate from the microcirculation may have utility in treating critically ill patients. Our goals were to determine how finger-stick capillary lactate correlates with arterial lactate levels in patients from the surgical intensive care unit, and to compare how capillary and arterial lactate trend over time in patients undergoing resuscitat...

متن کاملBlood lactate as a predictor for in-hospital mortality in patients admitted acutely to hospital: a systematic review
BACKGROUND Using blood lactate monitoring for risk assessment in the critically ill patient remains controversial. Some of the discrepancy is due to uncertainty regarding the appropriate reference interval, and whether to perform a single lactate measurement as a screening method at admission to the hospital, or serial lactate measurements. Furthermore there is no consensus whether the sample s...
